...History In 1883..., William Rankin came from Galston in Scotland (with his family) to the town of Howard to take charge of the Queensland Collieries Ltd. This Company being at the time the largest group which made up the Burrum coal fields, an area approx. 8 miles x 12 miles.
In 1886 William Rankin went back to Galston for 3 to 4 Years in which time his son Colonel C.D.W. (Colin Dunlop Wilson) Rankin bought out from England one Stephen Ward, (builder extraordinaire) building parts of Lincoln Cathedral in England etc., to Howard to build what is now the Colonel mansion of 64 Squares "Brooklyn (so named after William Rankin's brother who went to Brookyln U.S.A.). The house completed in 1890 and saw a checkered era up until death of Colonel Rankin in 1940. The Rankins were an extremely well-connected family in the old country and Brooklyn has seen the likes of Dukes, Duchesses, Earles etc. not to mention the countless high ranking politicians of the day as frequent guests of the Rankins.
Colonel Rankins daughter, Dame Annabelle Rankin was made O.B.E. in 1957 on their recommendation of sir Robert Menzies, Government Whip 1947-49, first Queensland women to become senator, Federal Housing Minister 1966-71, the list of her achievements goes on and finishing with High Commissioner to New Zealand, certainly a women of great distinction. It is easy to see where her background came from, as her father Colonel Rankin was a Colonel in the Boer War, Brigadier General in the 1st W.W., Queensland M.L.A. and State Minister for Railways for 13 years. Jean Rankin, Annabelle's sister was also very active in nursing circles and girl guide areas.
The Rankins must have been in their day the equivalent to Royalty, with uniformed servants, chauffeured cars and groomsmen etc. The silent movies in town would not start until the Colonel and family arrived where audiences would stand and sign God Save the King as the Rankins walked in. The Rankins were good to the townspeople having annual party days in the grounds (6 gardeners to keep them in trim) around a huge maypole, races for the kids etc. Also, many stories abound of the Colonels fairness and generosity to the struggling miners families. He was obviously a man of his word and great visions being one of, if not the first man to set up coal trade with Japan and enticed a trade that saw huge coal ships tie up at the old Urangan Jetty.
