About the Peel region
This region of WA is the state's smallest, but it packs quite a punch in just 6,648 km². It is located along the state's west coast, just 75 km below Perth, and is bordered to the north by Perth's greater metropolitan area, to the south by the South West region, and to the east by the Wheatbelt. Peel is home to the key regional locale of Mandurah, which is the second-fastest growing regional city in Australia.
The region is made up of a patchwork of pristine coastline, vibrant urban regions and rich agricultural and horticultural land. It is also home to an extensive wetland system full of unique flora and fauna.
The traditional owners of the land on which Peel now stands are the Noongar language group; the Bindjareb subgroup are the traditional inhabitants of the city of Mandurah and surrounds.
Local councils
Western Australia's Peel region includes 5 municipalities: Shire of Boddington, City of Mandurah, Shire of Murray, Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, and Shire of Waroona.
Climate information
Peel has a relatively cool climate by Western Australian standards. Its key city of Mandurang experiences a mean annual maximum temperature of 23.7 °C, and a mean minimum of 14.7 °C. The region receives some of the most rainfall of any in south-western WA, with about 700 mm falling annually, on average.
Population
The estimated population of the Peel region is reported as 142,960 as of 2019.
Education
There are a number of excellent kindergartens, pre-schools, primary schools and secondary schools in the region, and with its proximity to the Perth metropolitan area, parents may also choose to send their children to school in the state's capital.
Those hoping to undertake tertiary studies may choose to enrol in Murdoch University, which has a campus in Mandurang, or otherwise pursue a trade at South Metropolitan TAFE in Mandurang.
Employment and local businesses
The Peel region has a Gross Regional Product of $8 billion, and supports approximately 37,641 jobs. The region's top five industries by number of people employed are retail, healthcare & social assistance, construction, education & training, and manufacturing.
Mining is the mainstay of the region's economy, and also a significant local employer. Peel is home to a wealth of mineral resources, and features the world's largest bauxite mine and Australia's largest operational gold mine. The sectors of manufacturing, construction and agriculture are also significant economic contributors.
Housing
Median house price varies across the Peel region. Mandurah's median is $250,000, Waroona's sits at $267,500, Boddington's around $200,000 and Pinjarra's at $309,000. The medians for all locales were less than that of the $458,000 state median.
The region had a median weekly house rental (for a 3-bedroom home) of $270 in Mandurah, $310 in Waroona, $300 in Boddington and $300 in Pinjarra, all below WA's $395 median.
