845 Killora Road North Bruny TAS 7150

Some properties offer a beautiful home. Others offer something far more enduring: a sense of history, a story to become part of, and a way of life that feels increasingly rare. Oakchester Cottage is one of North Bruny Island's most treasured historic cottages. Dating back to the 1860s, this beautifully restored English-style home sits privately within 4.047 hectares (10 acres) of peaceful countryside, offering a rare opportunity to own not only a remarkable home, but a genuine piece of Bruny Island history.

Originally built by Englishwoman Antoinette Pignon Powle, a literary and fiercely independent woman who once rode from the cottage to work as a governess for families across North Bruny. Today, the home is locally remembered as Mr Wisby's Cottage and it remains a wonderfully evocative piece of Bruny Island history, thoughtfully renovated while retaining the character and charm of its fascinating past.

Upon entering the gate and venturing through a secluded paddock, the arrival at the cottage is serenely romantic. Set amongst its open rural landscape, surrounding mature eucalypts and graceful blackwood trees, the property has a quiet sense of seclusion that feels genuinely removed from the everyday. Yet it remains remarkably accessible, conveniently located just 10 minutes from the Bruny Island ferry terminal and less than an hour from Hobart.

Inside, the cottage is warm, welcoming, and filled with personality. Original Baltic pine walls, period details, and beautiful antique oak furniture imported from England create an atmosphere of timeless country charm, while modern improvements ensure comfortable contemporary living. Two generous bedrooms, a nostalgic living area, and an inviting kitchen and dining space provide an intimate retreat, while the beautifully updated bathroom/laundry is a standout, combining a walk-in shower with a classic claw-foot bath, the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring the spectacular beauty of Bruny Island. Quality European kitchen appliances, gas hot water, electric heating, underground power, satellite internet, and premium white goods add everyday convenience, without compromising the cottage's heritage character.

From every window, the surrounding acreage becomes part of the experience. Step outside onto the sunny entertaining deck and simply slow down, enjoying the tranquillity, changing light, and expansive rural outlook that make this setting so special. Beyond the cottage, the property reveals another layer of opportunity. A creek with a semi-permanent stream meanders through the land, complemented by two dams or waterholes, established stands of trees and magical spots to pause, picnic, and enjoy the peaceful surrounds. Practical infrastructure includes two 5,000-gallon galvanised rainwater tanks with a pressure system and the original timber storage shed. With generous areas of cleared and semi-cleared land, the property provides an ideal foundation for those seeking to embrace a more productive country lifestyle, whether that means growing, keeping animals, or simply enjoying the space and freedom.

And for those seeking more than a private retreat, the possibilities are intriguing. The property is currently operated as an established licensed short-term accommodation, providing an opportunity to continue an existing income stream. Alternatively, the acreage could inspire a boutique farm stay, artist or writer's retreat, garden enterprise, vineyard, flower or bulb farm, lavender and botanical venture, or future accommodation concept, subject to relevant approvals. There is also the opportunity to acquire Oakchester Cottage on a 'walk-in, walk-out' basis, with furnishings included, subject to offer. Thoughtfully furnished and ready to enjoy, the next custodian can simply arrive, settle in, and begin writing the next chapter in the story of this very special Bruny Island property.

Although, what makes Oakchester Cottage truly special cannot just be measured in hectares, bedrooms, or features. It's the feeling of standing on the deck in the afternoon sun, looking across your own piece of Bruny Island and imagining the lives that have unfolded here, and the stories these remarkable walls could tell. A place with a history already written yet waiting for someone new to become part of its story.

A rare home. A remarkable history. Ten acres of possibility. And a very special Bruny Island story waiting for its next chapter.
