Explore the Southern Mallee
The Southern Mallee district is a special place to live and work in South Australia, offering genuine rural living with proximity to urban amenities. The Adelaide metropolitan area is only 200 kilometres to its west, and major regional centres like Murray Bridge and Loxton are even closer.
Pinnaroo and Lameroo are the commercial, community and residential centres of the Southern Mallee, with the majority of the population concentrated in these towns. Other residents live in rural locations or in the small urban areas of Parilla and Geranium.
The total population of the region only just exceeds 2000 people, but little though it may be, this it is a highly engaged and active community with strengths in volunteering, arts and culture, sport and a growing reputation for innovative farming.
Wetlands in Pinnaroo
The Southern Mallee has a well-earned reputation as an inviting community, and its diverse economic base supports opportunities in dryland farming and horticulture in addition to many business opportunities in our two urban centres. Tourism activity in Southern Mallee is also growing with a focus on the region's amazing conservation parks.
The area receives a reasonable amount of rainfall, averaging 400-600 mm a year.

A community focus
The local Council is focused on maintaining and improving community facilities, with significant recent investment into a range of facilities. This includes the major refurbishment of local swimming pools, development of two new 5-day-per-week childcare centres and completing works on community halls.
Council also partners with local community groups to help improve facilities like local museums, and offer events such as Australia Day celebrations, Christmas pageants and the Pinnaroo Show. The district has medical, police, ambulance, education and library services.
