About the Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday region
This Queensland region, which spans approximately 90,000 km², is centrally located between the state's major cities of Cairns and Brisbane on its east coast. It is bordered to the north by the Townsville and North West region, and to the south by the Fitzroy and Central West region. The region's principle centre is the urban area of Mackay, though it is also home to other major regional centres including Bowen, Moranbah, and Airlie Beach.
Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday is one of Queensland's smaller regions, but it is nonetheless diverse in terms of its economy and land use. For instance, the tourism industry plays a significant role in Airlie Beach, while Moranbah and Dysart are primarily mining resource towns, rendering them very different areas despite their proximity.
The region is the traditional home of the Yuwibara, Koinmerburra, Barada Barna, Wiri, Ngaro, Gia and Juru people. Readers are invited to learn more about the region's Aboriginal history via the Indigenous languages map of Queensland.

This Queensland region enjoys a sub-tropical climate. Summers are generally hot and wet, with an average temperature of 27 °C, while winters are reasonably balmy, with an average temperature of 17 °C. The tropical cyclone season, which effects this largely-coastal region, runs from December to April.
The majority of rainfall occurs between November and April, with the region receiving 689 mm annually on average.

Education
This region has a number of excellent pre-school, primary school and secondary school options for parents to choose from.
Those wishing to progress to higher education can study at universities including Central Queensland University and James Cook University, or at any one of the region's numerous other well-known educational institutions which provide courses targetted at specific industries.
Employment and local businesses
The region has a Gross Regional Product of $24.4 billion, and is home to approximately 85,165 local jobs. It has one of the fastest-growing economies in Queensland, with an average growth rate of 5.5% per annum in recent years, significantly higher than the state average of 2.3%.
The region's top five industries by number of people employed are mining, retail, health care & social assistance, accommodation & food services, and construction. Although they are not necessarily the most significant employers in the Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday region, the area's key economic drivers include the sectors of resource mining, agriculture, construction and tourism.

The median house price for the region was $333,250 for Mackay, $130,000 for Isaac and $350,000 for Whitsunday as of March 2018.
The region also had a median weekly house rental (for a 3-bedroom home) of $320 for Mackay, $250 for Isaac and $330 for Whitsunday.

What: The Hamilton Island Race Week is one of the most popular and well-known yachting events in Australia, and competitors and visitors from across the world make the trek to the island every year in August for this week-long carnival. They come not only for the numerous yachting events on offer, designed so that there is something for every yachtie, but also for the diverse range of onshore events, including chef-cooked meals, fashion shows and wine tasting.
