About the Brisbane City region

This Queensland region, which is home to the capital city of Brisbane, lies on the banks of the Brisbane river on the state's east coast. It is made up of the metropolitan, urban area of the Brisbane CBD and its inner suburbs, which rest upon the floodplain of the Brisbane River Valley, and is sandwiched between Moreton Bay and the Taylor and D'Aguilar mountain ranges. 

The Jagera and Turrbal peoples are the traditional custodians of the land on which Brisbane stands.

Brisbane City's climate is subtropical, with an average summer high temperature of 26 °C and a winter low of 16 °C, perfect for exploring the great outdoors. 

Rainfall is abundant in the region, which receives 1,200 mm annually, on average.

• Brisbane Festival

Where: Across Brisbane, QLD

When: Annually, in September

What: The Brisbane Festival is the city's most eagerly awaited event, celebrating the unique personality and character of Queensland's capital. An explosion of curated art performances jolts the city from its winter slumber, as local artists (and, notably, the local Indigenous community) use its river and iconic buildings as a canvas for their pieces. Brisbanites and visitors can enjoy plays, live performances and interactive experiences over the festival's nearly three-week run. 

• The Ekka

Where: Bowen Hills, Queensland

When: Annually, in August

What: The Royal Queensland Show, Australianised as the 'Ekka' (for 'exhibition'), is one of Queensland's largest and most-loved annual events. Drawing crowds of up to 400,000, the Ekka charms visitors with its old-school carnival vibes and celebration of the agricultural heritage of Queensland. 

Panyiri Greek Festival

Where: Brisbane, QLD

When: Annually, in May

What: This famous Greek cultural festival, which will celebrate 45 years in 2021, describes itself as a "kaleidoscopic cultural explosion". The over 60,000 people who attend annually can can expect to enjoy Zorba dancing, plate smashing, honey puff eating competitions, cooking demonstrations, and of course dozens delicious Greek delicacies to be sampled.
