About the Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula region
This huge South Australian region covers almost a quarter (or 230,000 km²) of the state's land, and is located in the south and far western reaches of the state. It is home to the major regional centres of Whyalla and Port Lincoln, which is home to approximately 62% of the people who live in the region.
The region boasts a range of beautiful natural landscapes, including 2000 km of pristine coastline, sand ridges and desert areas, and significant National Parks full of native vegetation.
The predominant Aboriginal people groups living in the Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula region at the time of European colonisation were the Nauo, Barngarla, Wirangu, Mirning, and Kokatha people.

Climate information
This region enjoys a Mediterranean climate, characterised by warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. In summer, average maximum temperatures range from 29 °C near the coast to 34 °C inland, while winter average maximums sit at about 15-18 °C.
Mean rainfall in the Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula area ranges from approximately 500 mm in the southern coastal reaches of the region to 250 mm inland.

The estimated population of the Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula region is reported as 58,415 as of 2016.
Education
This region of SA is home to numerous primary and secondary schools, particularly in its larger cities, including Whyalla and Port Lincoln. There are also schools servicing the more remote areas of the region.
For students who wish to undertake tertiary studies, the Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula region features a number of TAFE SA campuses, located in Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Ceduna and Wudinna. The region is also home to the Lincoln Marine Science Centre, a campus of Flinders University.

Although they are not its largest employers, tourism and mining are the region’s fastest-growing industries and have the potential to contribute significantly to the local economy in the future.

Median house price varies across the Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula region. Whyalla has a median house price of $320,000, while Port Lincoln's median sat at $290,000, both values below the South Australian median.
The region had a median weekly house rental (for a 3-bedroom home) of $255 in Whyalla and $310 in Port Lincoln, both of which are below SA's median.

What: A wide array of participation events, cultural displays, and market stalls are open to all who attend South Australia’s largest community festival. The Tunarama Festival is held annually in late January and is a celebration of everything that is best about the Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula region. While there are numerous tours and events on offer, the festival is known for its delicious seafood, providing some of the freshest marine products in the world.

What: Hosted by the oldest national rodeo organisation in the world, Rodeo by the Sea is the most anticipated on the Eyre Peninsula. The family-friendly festival is fully catered, offering bar facilities and market stalls alongside a number of side amusements to the main rodeo event. With free camping available for ticket holders, this rodeo extends well into the night and makes for a great weekend out!

When: Annually, in April
What: Add a pop of colour to your autumn with the Colour Tumby Street Art Festival, a weekend festival held every April in the quiet town of Tumby Bay. Featuring street artists from all over the world, the festival is a celebration of an underrated art medium. In addition to community murals and live painting, festival goers can enjoy free film screenings, silent discos, and a selection of great food and drink.
