About the Wide Bay Burnett region
This region of Queensland occupies 48,600 km² of the state's land, spanning the area from the rich soils of the North and South Burnett area in the east to the exquisite Fraser Coast on its western edge. It is home to the major regional centres of Bundaberg, Gympie, Hervey Bay and Maryborough.
The region has historical strengths in the agriculture and manufacturing industries. However, it is also home to remarkable natural assets, including the World Heritage listed Fraser Island and the sublime southern reaches of the Great Barrier Reef, which make it a growing tourism hub.
The land that is now occupied by the Wide Bay Burnett region is the traditional home of a host of Aboriginal groups, namely the Badtjala/Butchulla, Biggenden, Byellee, Darielbelum/Dundubara, Djaku-nde, Gooreng Gooreng, Gurang, Jangerie Jangerie, Kabi, Taribelang Bunda, Wakka Wakka and Wulli Wulli peoples.

Education
The Wide Bay Burnett region is home to a number of state, independent and Catholic primary and secondary schools.
The region also has two universities: the University of Southern Queensland and CQUniversity, both of which are very well-respected in Australia. TAFE East Coast is the largest provider of vocational education in the area. It provides a variety of courses across the region's six campuses, located in Bundaberg, Gympie, Hervey Bay, Kingaroy, Maryborough, and Nurunderi (Cherbourg).

What: Held in the depths of the Amamoor State Forest, this event is Australia's first and best camping and music festival experience. More than 100 artists come from far and wide to perform across five venues for four days, delighting visitors with the sounds of country, roots, blues and folk rock music.
Where: Goomeri, QLD
When: Annually, in June
What: This quirky event began in the 1990s as a way to bring some joy into the lives of the inhabitants of the drought-stricken Goomeri community. It has grown from there garner national and international acclaim. Over 14,000 visitors make the trek annually to Goomeri to watch a range of pumpkin-based events (including pumpkin-growing and decorating competitions, pumpkin shot put, and the iconic Great Australian Pumpkin Roll), wander around the market stalls, and enjoy the parades and competitions on offer.

When: Annually, in July
What: This unique local festival brings the Maryborough community together for four days of storytelling through a diverse host of art forms, from concerts to plays and pop-up performances. It is, above all else, a celebration of Maryborough's most famous daughter: Pamela Lyndon Travers, author of the Mary Poppins books. The festival has countless family-friendly events, including pram-pushing races, the Chimney Sweep Dash, and the opportunity to mingle with the Mary Poppins characters who stroll through the festival in costume.
