About the Hume region
This Victorian region covers 40,000 km² of land in the north-eastern part of the state. It is bordered by the Loddon Mallee region to the west, and both Greater Melbourne and the Gippsland region to the south.
The region is a place of great natural beauty. It takes in Victoria's alpine areas, including the ski mountains of Hotham and Buller, the state's 'food bowl' of Goulburn and its surrounding agricultural regions, and the legendary High Country, and is home to key rural centres such as Shepparton and Wangaratta. With world-class food and wine, access to incredible holiday destinations and heritage sites, and nationally important transport routes (the Hume and Goulburn Valley transport corridors), the Hume is a fast-growing area with lots of potential.
The traditional owners of the land on which the Hume region now stands are the Taungurung and Yorta Yorta people.
Local councils
Victoria's Hume region includes twelve municipalities: Alpine Shire, Benalla Rural City, City of Wodonga, Greater Shepparton City, Indigo Shire, Mansfield Shire, Mitchell Shire, Moira Shire, Murrindindi Shire, Strathbogie Shire, Towong Shire and Wangaratta Rural City.
Climate information
The Hume region is a large one, comprising both the alpine regions of Victoria and lower-lying land such as the floodplains along the Murray, so its climate is necessarily variable.
In the Hume's alpine regions, the average maximum temperature is about 20 °C in the summer, while the average minimum in winter sits at approximately 4 °C. On the region's lower slopes and plains, meanwhile, average temperatures range from a 31 °C maximum in summer to a 12 °C minimum in winter. The entire winter is susceptible to frosts during the colder months between April and October, and mountains above 1000 m sometimes enjoy snow.
Rainfall occurs primarily in winter and spring. It ranges from an annual 2000 mm on average in the alpine regions to less than 500 mm on the floodplains.
Population
The estimated population of the Hume region is reported as 294,030 as of 2019.
Hume's population is only growing, and is projected to increase by over 38% by 2031.
Education
The Hume region is home to many excellent kindergartens, pre-schools, primary schools and secondary schools, both public and private. Higher education options in the region include campuses of La Trobe University, University of Melbourne and Charles Sturt University, along with several TAFE institutions (GOTAFE and Wodonga Tafe).
The region also features a number of specialist education facilities, including industry-leading institutions in the fields of agriculture, equine management; construction, rural health and motorsports.
Employment and local businesses
The Hume region has a Gross Regional Product of $14.3 billion. Its top three industries by number of people employed are agriculture and forestry, manufacturing, and health care and social assistance. The region boasts 114,710 local jobs.
The industry and employment make-up of Hume is necessarily varied, due to the size of the region. Agriculture is a key economical contributor in the west, while tourism is crucial in the east, with alpine and gourmet food and wine areas.
Housing
There is no listed median house price for the Hume region.
The region had a median weekly house rental (for a 3-bedroom home) of $280, $40 below Victoria's median.
