About the Grampians region
This Victorian region spans the area from the western edge of Metropolitan Melbourne to the South Australian border, flanked to the north by the Loddon Mallee region and to the south by the Barwon South West region. About half of its population is concentrated in the large regional city of Ballarat, but it also contains smaller regional centres such as Horsham, Ararat and Daylesford.
The region is steeped in agricultural and gold rush history, and is home to such heritage sites as Sovereign Hill and the Silo Arts Trail. It is also an area of great natural beauty. Visitors flock from far away to visit its natural attractions, including Mt Arapiles, the Little Desert National Park, and the mountains of the Grampians National Park (which give the region its name).
The traditional owners of the Grampians region include the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk family groups and the Djabwurrung, Wathaurung, Dja Dja Wurrung and Wurundjeri people.
Local councils
Victoria's Grampians region includes eleven municipalities: Ararat Rural City, City of Ballarat, Golden Plains Shire, Hepburn Shire, Hindmarsh Shire, Horsham Rural City, Moorabool Shire, Northern Grampians Shire, Pyrenees Shire, West Wimmera Shire and Yarriambiack Shire
Climate information
The Grampions region enjoys warm to hot summers and cool winters, with frosts occurring frequently. The average maximum temperature in summer is 27-30 °C in the region's west and 25 °C in its east, while winters see an average maximum temperature of 13-15 °C in the west and 10 °C in the east.
Rainfall is variable in the Grampians. The Grampians mountains (which give the region its name) receive 1000 mm annually, on average, while areas in the north of the region get only 300 mm.
Population
The estimated population of the Grampians region is reported as 247,050 as of 2018.
Education
The Grampians region offers excellent education opportunities for its residents, with a number of public and private pre-schools, kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools all available in the region.
There are also tertiary education options available. The region is home to several universities — the University of Ballarat, along with campuses of the Australian Catholic University, Federation University and the University of Melbourne — and one TAFE (NMIT College of Wine).
Employment and local businesses
The Grampians region has a Gross Regional Product of $10.7 billion, and boasts 101,592 local jobs. The region's top five industries by number of people employed are healthcare & social assistance, retail, manufacturing, education, and construction.
Although not among the top five industries by employment, agriculture and food production are significant contributors to the economy of the Grampians. The region features extensive dryland farming area, particularly in its Wimmera Southern Mallee sub-region. Meanwhile, the growth of the Grampians' services sector is largely due to the existence of rural commercial centres within its Central Highlands sub-region, particularly Ballarat and Horsham.
Housing

The region had a median weekly house rental (for a 3-bedroom home) of $270, $70 below Victoria's median.
Events
Where: Stawell, VIC
When: Annually, over the Easter Long Weekend
What: Every year, professional athletes from across Australia and the world make the trek to the unassuming former gold-mining town of Stawell to take part in the Stawell Gift, one of the world's most famous and prestigious foot races. It has a long and storied history, having been held annually since 1878, and is also one of the few remaining races to be run on grass rather than on a synthetic rubber track. Australian athletics legends Cathy Freeman, Steve Hooker and Sally Pearson have all graced the Stawell track at one time or another, making the Stawell Gift a must-visit for sports-mad folks hoping to catch a glimpse of their idols.
Where: Ballarat, VIC
When: Annually, in March
What: The Ballarat Begonia Festival is a floral carnival that has been delighting visitors of all ages since its inauguration in 1953. Throughout its three-week run, the festival offers guests a schedule packed with markets, parades and workshops, in addition to the floral installations and garden displays that light up the city. No visit to the festival is complete without dropping by the Conservatory to admire the creative display of begonias there, either!
Where: Halls Gap, VIC
When: Annually, in May
What: Experience the majesty of the Grampians like never before at this iconic local festival, which highlights all the best the region has to offer in the way of food, wine and music. There are over 120 stalls available for visitors to peruse, selling food, hand-crafted goods and more. For those who want a more hands-on experience, there are also cooking demonstrations from guest chefs, masterclasses, and plenty of great live music, as well as lots of fun activities for the kids.
